Flexible Sigmoidoscopy
Flexible Sigmoidoscopy allows inspection of the lining of the rectum, anus and lower part of the colon using a flexible tube
What is a Sigmoidoscopy?
A sigmoidoscopy is a procedure used to see inside the sigmoid colon and rectum. Sigmoidoscopy can detect inflamed tissue, abnormal growths, and ulcers.
Reason for Exam
Detect inflamed tissues, abnormal growths and ulcers
Diagnose unexplained change in bowel habits, abdominal pain, bleeding and weight loss
How does a Sigmoidoscopy differ from a Colonoscopy?
A colonoscopy examines the entire colon, while a sigmoidoscopy covers only the lower part of the colon, also known as the rectum and sigmoid colon.
How is Sigmoidoscopy performed?
A long, flexible, lighted instrument called a sigmoidoscope, or scope, is inserted into the anus and slowly guides it through the rectum and into the sigmoid colon. A small camera transmits images from inside the colon to a computer screen, allowing the doctor to carefully examine the tissues lining the sigmoid colon and rectum. When the scope reaches the transverse colon, the scope is slowly withdrawn while the lining of the colon is carefully examined again.
